Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer sent an email to the employees confirming the launch of Bing.com and it clearly portrayed their seriousness towards the business. Ballmer in his email mentioned that Bing.com, the new search engine from Microsoft is an extremely crucial step forward for MS in redefining search and expanding their share of the online advertising market.

In fact Microsoft is positioning Bing.com top be more than a search engine. They are calling it the decision engine. To quote Ballmer on this..

“With Bing, our goal is to do more than just make it easier for people to find information. Today, we’re delivering a powerful set of tools that will enable people to make faster, more informed decisions.

In short, Bing is a decision engine that goes beyond what people have come to think of as search—and what our competitors offer today.“

At present this search engine is available only to the Microsoft employees and from next week on it would be made public at Bing.com, till then you might like watching this video that shows Bing in action.

As with most major search engine launch a buzz has again started on the question if Bing is going to be the Google killer ? I think it is too early to comment or speculate on this because we haven’t yet seen the new engine in action.

With Google’s personalized search catching up and their extensive coverage of local search I think one of the main challenges that Bing would face ( if they plan to be a Google replacement) is in regards to local and personalized searches.

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Yahoo and Google are closer than ever to a deal where Yahoo would outsource their search monetization to Google. Google continues to do a much better job of producing revenue from searches – some estimates suggest that Google gets more than twice Yahoo’s revenue per search click.

Yahoo also is continuing to negotiate with AOL as part of Yahoo’s efforts to stave off a takeover by Microsoft.

The Journal suggests that Yahoo’s April 22 earnings report may play a key role in the Microsoft takeover argument. If Yahoo comes in with strong earnings it will strengthen the idea that the Microsoft bid is too low, but if earnings are weak it will support Microsoft’s efforts to force a Yahoo merger against the will of the current Yahoo board.

Microsoft said it had offered to buy Yahoo for USD 31 per share, which it said represented a 62 per cent premium above the company’s closing stock price on Nasdaq on Thursday.

“We have great respect for Yahoo, and together we can offer an increasingly exciting set of solutions for consumers, publishers and advertisers while becoming better positioned to compete in the online services market,” Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said in a statement.

Yahoo was not immediately available for comment. Microsoft said it had identified four areas that would generate at least USD 1 billion in annual synergies for the combined entity.

Yahoo shares rose 56 per cent to $29.95 in pre-market trading on Friday following the announcement. US stock index futures also jumped after the news was released.
