It has often been argued in the SEO world whether or not page load time affects your organic ranking. While there has been no definitive statement from the search engines most good SEOs would suggest all possible methods to reduce page load time for delivering a better user experience. (and yes that too is a part of a SEOs Job).

Google did declare that they would be considering Page load time in calculating the quality score of a landing page in Adwords more than a year back, however, they have been silent about its impact on the organic front.

Though not a clear statement yet, Google now has given a clear indication to the webmasters about the importance of page load time by including the “Site Performance” tool in their webmaster tool set.

This is a wonderful tool that gives you a detailed graphical representation of your page’s load time as well as a relative value of its slowness / fastness ( e.g., slower than 53% of websites etc ) compared to other websites .

In addition the tool also points out some of the pages that are guilty of being slow and a detailed diagnosis of those pages pointing out exactly what is causing the delay and how you can make your website faster.

Now with such a wonderful tool available ( and remember its Free !) there is no reason why you should have a slow website. So get your website registered with Google Webmaster Tools ( if you are not registered yet) and use the site performance tool to reduce your page load time.

Let’s all work towards a faster web!

Google announced about its Caffeine update on 10th of this month through Google Webmaster Blog. The Caffeine update is “under the hood” at the moment and general users would not see much difference to the search results due to this.

This Google update is going to be the next generation architecture for Google web search and would push multiple dimensions of the search functionality including size of index, indexing speed, accuracy, comprehensiveness.

While Matt Cutts have somewhat underplayed the chances of any major change in ranking and defined it as “rearchitecting or rewriting how we index pages” SEO s have already started speculating on the impact of Caffeine update. The blog posts by Matt Cutts and also at Google Webmaster blog seems to echo the same factors – Size, Indexing speed, accuracy”. As a derived conclusion from this I think most SEO s would be able to understand that.

How Caffeine Update Would Affect SEO

a) Size – Apparently means bigger Google index – more competition

b) Indexing Speed – Chances of getting content indexed faster thereby helping with ranking particulalrly for time sensitive content like news, scores etc. Real time search has been the buzz word in the search world recently and I wont be surprised if with this Caffeine update Google takes real time search to the next level.

c) Accuracy -some tweaks to the algo that would focus more on relevancy. To quote Matt Cutts, “Currently, even power users won’t notice much of a difference at all. This update is primarily under the hood: we’re rewriting the foundation of some of our infrastructure. But some of the search results do change,”

Matt also mentioned that the Caffeine update would be infrastructure wise roughly comparable to Big Daddy Update – so its gonna be a major change but it will be rolled out slowly so regular users wont see much difference, power users might notice a few.

Unlike its prior algo updates, Google this time launched a sandbox environment for testing the Caffeine update at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ however, it seems to be down for maintenance at the moment. Google engineers have been actively seeking top level feedback from users in respect to the differences that they observe in the nature of search results at Google.com and the Caffeine sandbox.

You can check the video below where Mike from WebProNews interviews Matt on Caffeine update.

It is a well known fact that receiving links from related websites or web pages can help with rankings, but what most SEO gurus would not admit ( knowingly or unknowingly) is that linking out to a related web page or website can also help your website ranking.

Recently I have set up an experiment page to test some of my assumptions about Image optimization but before I could come to any conclusion on that I got this definite proof of how the pages to which you link from your website can affect your rankings.

What I Did

I created a HTML page that contains two images with the same Alt attribute on both of them. I intentionally did not put any Title or Meta tags or any text on that page. Then hosted the page on one of my client’s server ( with his permission) which hosts his website which is no way related to the images. This page with the images was an orphan page without any link to the site.

I ensured that there is no search result in Google for the nonsense words that I used as Alt attributes for the images

I set up a link to this image page from a blog with a simple text that is no way related to the text used as alt attribute.

What I Saw

After 2 days of setting up the whole thing, I saw the web page with the two images started to show up in Google web search when searched for the text used as Alt Attribute.

After 4-5 days, when I searched Google with the text used as Alt Attribute, Google results not only showed the page with the images in them but also THE BLOG THAT LINKS TO THE PAGE !

We need to remember that,

I used some nonsense text as alt attribute for images which did not have any search result in Google while this was set up.

The text used in Alt attribute of the images has not been used anywhere on the blog that links to the image page.

Still the blog showed up when searched for the Alt attribute – How ?

This is only possible, if Google’s algorithm attributes some amount of relevance to a web page for the keywords present on another page that they are linking out to.

I could have actually mentioned the Page URLs and the alt attribute text but the experiment with image optimization is not yet done. So I would better wait to see some results on that before I put those details on the blog.
